Tournament 5
Retro Event Branding Campaign
When Tournament 5 relocated to a venue 20 minutes from its usual location, attendance risk became a primary concern.
I developed a retro-inspired campaign system designed to generate renewed excitement, establish a distinct event identity, and maintain ticket momentum despite the venue shift.
Result: 218 attendees, surpassing the typical average of 140.
Role: Freelance Designer
Timeline: 3 Weeks
Deliverables: Logo suite + event poster + social campaign graphics
The Challenge
Tournament 5 marked the first time the event was hosted outside its core five-mile radius. The new venue introduced uncertainty around turnout and required a campaign that felt intentional rather than transitional.
The objective was to maintain or exceed historical attendance while reinforcing event credibility.
Creative Direction
The visual system leaned into bold 90s-inspired typography, high-contrast color, and layered graphic elements to create energy and nostalgia.
To align with the host venue, the palette was refined to incorporate Solanco High School’s black, white, and yellow, ensuring the event felt connected to its location while maintaining visual impact.
Identity System
The logo suite centered on an integrated “T5” mark, merging the letterform and numeral into a single recognizable symbol.
Primary and secondary variations were developed to ensure flexibility across posters, fight cards, and social assets. Angular treatments and stripe detailing subtly referenced Jiu-Jitsu ranking structure while maintaining bold visual clarity.
Client Collaboration
During the presentation, the client requested strict adherence to the venue’s black, white, and yellow palette. While the original concept introduced additional tones to enhance the retro aesthetic, I provided strategic considerations around visual impact and audience perception.
Ultimately, the final direction aligned with the client’s branding strategy, reinforcing the venue connection while preserving the campaign’s energy.
Outcome
Tournament 5 drew 218 attendees, exceeding the historical average of 140.
The campaign successfully maintained momentum despite the venue change and strengthened the event’s visual identity across promotional touchpoints.
